When your town boundary lies along “Bread and Cheese Hollow Road,” it's a pretty good bet that there are some fantastic restaurants within its borders. In Smithtown, we are lucky to have a fantastic variety of restaurants, serving diverse cuisine options. Like everything in New York, however, eating out can get expensive quickly. For those times when you want great food without spending a fortune, I’ve put together a short list of the best places to eat in Smithtown for less than $50.
Voted the best Tex-Mex on Long Island, Del Fuego offers Tex-Mex alongside traditional Mexican fare. All the food is made from scratch in-house and it shows. The fun, festive atmosphere celebrates the joy of eating flavorful food with good friends and family. And then there’s the bar. With 65 tequilas available, a rotating selection of over 15 craft beers, and seasonally-inspired cocktails there is a drink for every taste. Del Fuego has a range of daily specials that are all fantastic. I am a bit partial to Taco Tuesdays when they offer a specially priced $11 taco menu for dinner and $2.50 tacos for lunch.
Established in 1969, Old Street Restaurant and Bar has been a Long Island favorite for nearly half a century. From burgers and sandwiches to pasta and steaks, Old Street has something for everyone. With sandwiches starting at $10, it is easy to get amazing food for two without spending over $50. That is unless you both decide to order the impressive 24oz Grilled Porterhouse Steak. This steak lover’s favorite is a sight to behold. Personally, I’m a big fan of the Chicken Saltimbocca. The sherry brown sauce pairs perfectly with the mushrooms and prosciutto.
Thai House Restaurant serves up authentic Thai food in the heart of Smithtown. Although everything on the menu is tasty, where Thai House really stands out from the crowd is with their seafood dishes. From the spicy, sweet and sour Tamarind Fish to the Sea Scallop Curry, the Thai House chefs know just how to enhance the delicate natural flavors of the sea with subtle spices. If you are not a fan of spicy food, don’t worry. There are plenty of meals that pack a lot of flavor without the spice. Pad Thai or Massaman Curry are both excellent and mild dishes to try.
Winner of a February 2014 OpenTable Diners’ Choice Award, Ciro’s Restaurant serves fine Italian food for both dine-in and take out. From the Eggplant Rollatini to the Chicken Marsala, Ciro’s authentic Italian food will not disappoint. Many of their best-selling dinner entrees are available in lunch portions at a special price. In my opinion, the Fried Calamari Arrabiata and Stuffed Cherry Peppers appetizers are the perfect way to start your meal off with a bang.
No Smithtown restaurant list would be complete without Maureen’s Kitchen. This cash-only breakfast spot is a Long Island institution. It is so well-loved that you can expect a long wait, but the comfort food at Zagat-rated Maureen’s Kitchen is worth the wait. The Original Croissant French Toast (served with cream cheese and raspberry preserves) melts in your mouth. It’s a bit like having dessert for breakfast, which is, of course, part of the appeal. There are also a wide array of omelets on the menu, from the traditional to the completely original. Regulars will tell you, it is definitely worth checking the Daily Specials board.
