When Women Wore Whales unveils the surprising connection between 19th-century fashion and the American whaling industry. This captivating exhibit explores how baleen—commonly known as “whalebone” in the 1800s—was the hidden force behind the iconic silhouette of the fashionable woman: billowing skirts, cinched corsets, and dainty parasols. Derived from the massive filter-feeding structures in whales’ mouths, baleen was the era’s version of plastic—light, flexible, and strong—used to shape garments and accessories. Featuring fashion magazine illustrations, raw and crafted baleen artifacts, and ten stunning dresses spanning the century, the exhibit reveals how women’s style was shaped by the sea.
