When: Jul 24, 2025 through Nov 22, 2025 (daily)
Where: Zuccaire Gallery, 1220 Staller Center for the Arts, Stony Brook, NY
Weaving Words, Weaving Worlds is an evocative exhibition that explores the deep relationship between Indigenous languages and contemporary art, highlighting works by artists engaging with Algonquian languages spoken across Long Island and the Northeast. Through heritage, memory, and community, these artists harness creative expression to reclaim and revitalize language as a living force for storytelling, cultural continuity, and healing. The exhibition not only celebrates the enduring strength of Indigenous languages, but also confronts a painful legacy—colonial suppression, the trauma of boarding schools, and the silencing of voices, particularly those of missing and murdered Indigenous women. In doing so, it offers a space for remembrance, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for cultural survival.
